Solar Day of Action: Call your legislators!
It’s been more than six months since we hit the cap on the state’s most important solar program, net metering. Solar projects are stalled in 171 towns and cities across Massachusetts. Unless we lift the caps soon, it’s likely that many of those solar projects will never be built — and we’ll miss out on all of the environmental and economic benefits that they would bring.
We’ve made some progress, but proposals to lift the caps have stalled in the Legislature. So today, we’re working to get 300 community leaders and grassroots supporters to call their legislators and urge them to take action on solar.
Can you call your legislators today and urge them to expand access to solar?
The Senate passed a bill to lift the caps in July, but the House has not yet taken action.
With the right policies in place, we can get at least 20% of our electricity from solar by 2025. That’s why it’s crucial for state leaders to lift the caps on solar immediately and preserve programs like community shared solar that help make solar accessible to everyone.
Here’s what you should do:
1. Call your state representative. Call the House switchboard at (617) 722-2000, and ask to be put through to your representative. If you’re not sure who represents you, visit http://openstates.org/find_your_legislator/.
2. Ask your representative to support solar. Here’s a script you can use:
Hi, my name is ______________ and I’m a constituent of Representative _____________ from ____________ (town). I’m calling because I want to see Massachusetts get 20% of our electricity from solar by 2025. I urge the Representative to eliminate the caps on solar power and ensure that the benefits of solar are available to everyone through community shared solar. I also urge you to oppose Governor Baker’s proposal to slash the compensation for solar energy, which would make it harder for many communities to access solar. Thank you!
3. Let us know how it goes! Email ben@environmentmassachusetts.org to let us know that you’ve made the call, and share any responses from legislators so we can track progress.
Thanks for taking action! With your support, we can keep solar growing in Massachusetts.
